Signs worth checking
A pterygium is a growth of tissue on the surface of the eye. It may extend toward the cornea, the clear front part of the eye. Some people notice:
- Visible tissue that seems to be growing over the eye.
- Recurring redness or irritation.
- A gritty feeling or the sensation of something in the eye.
- Changes in vision.
When to book a visit
If you notice the tissue growing, it bothers you often or seems to affect your sight, we can assess it. Even if it causes few symptoms, an examination helps us understand its characteristics.
When to consider surgery
We may consider surgery if the growth affects your vision, advances toward the center of the cornea or causes persistent discomfort. The recommendation depends on what we find when examining your eye.
